Job Title: Physical Therapist

General Description
The physical therapist is responsible for organizing and conducting prescribed physical therapy programs to patients in their assigned clinical setting according to agency or clinic policies.  The therapist works with patients to restore function or prevent disability following disease or injury and to help the patient achieve maximum capabilities. The therapist works in conjunction with clinic staff.

Specific Functions

  1. Demonstrates Skillful Performance in the Practice of Physical Therapy.
    • Completes an appropriate patient assessment and evaluation, and provides ongoing care, to include the patient's functional status and type of care provided. The evaluation could include, as appropriate to the scope of care provided by the professional, but is not limited to: the level of independence in appropriate environments, mobility status, problems with continence, the ability to operate and maintain equipment, communication skills, memory, cognitive level, orientation, emotional response to current health status, pain, and dental function. The functional assessment could include, as appropriate to the scope of care provided by the professional, but is not limited to: range of motion, muscle strength, the incision site, gait on flat surfaces and stairs, bed mobility, transfers in various settings, housekeeping, and home maintenance.
  2. Demonstrates Sound Judgment and Decision Making Skills.
    • Always attempts to understand patients needs and responds accordingly.
    • Demonstrates sound judgment, based on principles of patient therapy.
    • Demonstrates ability to assess patients and choose appropriate course of action.
  3. Knowledgeable About the Practice of Physical Therapy
    • Graduate of accredited Physical Therapy program
    • Maintains current licensure with appropriate state Physical Therapy Board. Demonstrates a complete understanding of policies and procedures concerning physical therapy
    • Demonstrates a desire to increase knowledge base of physical therapy.
  4. Functions in an Effective Working Relationship with Supervisors, Co-Workers, Patients and Colleagues.
    • Demonstrates positive communication skills in all aspects of professional relationships.
  5. Plans and Implements Time Effectively.
    • Coordinates work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency.
    • Able to adjust and revise schedule with a minimum of difficulty in order to accommodate changing patient and departmental needs.
    • Able to recognize and prioritize work responsibilities.

Job Title: Physical Therapist Assistant

General Description

The Physical Therapist Assistant performs physical therapy treatments and related duties as assigned by, and under the general supervision of, the physical therapist. The therapist works in conjunction with clinic staff.

Specific Functions

  1. Demonstrates ability to carry out Physical Therapy Care Programs or Portions thereof, as Planned by and with the Supervision of the Physical Therapist.
    • Accepts responsibility for patients' personal care and environment throughout the treatment.
    • Follows established procedure and observes safety precautions in the application and use of heat, cold, light, water, sound, massage, exercise and gait.
    • Carries out positioning and reconditioning exercises.
    • Trains patients in exercises, ambulation, and activities of daily living.
    • Carries out treatment utilizing special equipment.
    • Cares for braces, prostheses, bandages, and other active assistive devices.
    • Observes, records, and reports to supervisor the conditions, reactions (including pain), and responses related to his/her assigned duties.
    • Acts as an assistant to the physical therapist when the physical therapist is     performing tests, evaluations, and the complex treatment procedures.
    • Identifies and follows safety and medical precautions.
  2. Carries out Responsibilities Appropriate to the Established Physical Therapy Service.
    • Participates in clerical and reception activities.
    • Complies with procedures for maintenance of supplies and equipment and carries out duties necessary to comply with the related needs as delegated to him/her.
    • Maintains surveillance of environmental conditions within the physical therapy service.
    • Displays appropriate attitudes and behavior.

Essential Job Functions: As Therapy Aide/Technician

  1. Review current schedule of patients to be treated.
  2. Assist in maintaining a general orderly and clean state throughout the office.  Specifically, cleans the patient areas immediately before and after each therapy session.
  3. Must have working knowledge of medical terms and therapy procedures.
  4. Answers questions as able related to department operations and patient treatment or directs questions to proper person.
  5. Assists patients in preparation for, during, and at the conclusion of treatment.  Assembles equipment and accessories.
  6. Performs selected treatment procedures, which are commensurate with his/her training and are assigned to him/her therapist.

    Treat speech, language, cognitive-communication and swallowing disorders in individuals of all ages, from infants to the elderly.
